Where to See Fall Colors in Jefferson County

Dorothy Carnes County Park and Rose Lake State Natural Area
Just west of Fort Atkinson, Dorothy Carnes County Park is an excellent place to experience autumn on foot.

The park surrounds Rose Lake and includes rolling hills, woodlands, wetlands, prairie, and savanna habitat. With approximately nine miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails, visitors have plenty of opportunities to explore the landscape.

Bring binoculars, too. Rose Lake and its surrounding habitat make this a popular location for bird-watching and wildlife observation.

Fall activity idea: Take a morning hike, stop at the marsh overlook, and see how many different fall colors you can photograph along the way.

Korth Park
For a combination of open space, water, and changing leaves, head toward Korth Park near Lake Mills.

Its setting near Rock Lake makes the park a beautiful place for a fall walk, picnic, or relaxing afternoon outdoors. Former Jefferson County Board Chairman Michael Kelly has highlighted Korth Park's scenic views as one of his favorite local experiences.

Pair a park visit with a trip into downtown Lake Mills for lunch, shopping, or one of the community's fall events.

Explore Jefferson County by Trail
Autumn is also a great excuse to experience Jefferson County on two wheels—or two feet.

The Glacial River Trail travels through Jefferson County and provides opportunities to experience communities, countryside, and natural areas along the way.

There's also something new to explore this fall: the Jefferson County Interurban Trail. The paved multi-use trail between Watertown and Oconomowoc passes through a landscape of woods, fields, marshes, ponds, and river scenery.

Pack some water, choose a comfortable distance, and enjoy fall color at your own pace.

Take a Fall Colors Drive

Not every fall adventure requires hiking boots.

A drive through Jefferson County's countryside can be just as rewarding. Farms, woodlands, waterways, and small communities create an ever-changing autumn backdrop.

For a longer excursion, explore the Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive and the surrounding southern Kettle Moraine region. Wisconsin DNR's official Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive stretches 115 miles through six counties, with its southern end near Whitewater Lake.

Make your drive part of the destination: Stop for breakfast, visit a local shop, walk a trail, grab lunch, and continue exploring.

Fall road-trip tip: Avoid rushing. Some of the best parts of an autumn drive are the unexpected stops along the way.

Pick Pumpkins and Spend a Day on the Farm

Fall in Wisconsin wouldn't feel complete without a trip to a pumpkin patch.
